FAQ

Question: Does the school find jobs for students?

Answer: No, this is the responsibility of the student, to secure co-op employment.

 

Question: Do I need a driver’s license?

Answer: You do not technically need a driver’s license, but you are required to have transportation to and from work everyday.

 

Question: What happens if the employer cannot provide 30 hours for a given week?

Answer: Any day that work is canceled, or if the student is asked not to report to work, the student should be sent to school that day. The employer should also make a note on the students timesheet. 

 

Question: What happens if a student is injured on the job?

Answer: All work related injuries should be reported. If a student is injured on the job and medical attention is required,  please notify the Cooperative Education office.  

 

Question: Can student athletes or students that are in clubs at school participate in co-op?

Answer: Some students may play school sports or be involved in clubs. Participation in athletics or clubs should not prevent our students from participation in Cooperative Education. We ask employers to work with students that are participating in extracurricular activities. This may involve releasing them early or modifying the students work schedule  However, it is the responsibility of the student to provide a schedule of the clubs/sports that they belong to prior to the start date of the student’s co-op.

 

Question: Who is responsible for calling in sick, informing the school and employer about a co-op absence?

Answer: The student is responsible!  Parents and guardians should not be the ones communicating with the employer and school about co-op.

 

Question: Does the student need to work the same hours as the school day?

Answer: No, you can work different hours, but please abide by the child under-18 regulations.

  • If students are under 18 years of age the timeframe and amount of hour that they work are restricted. This includes hours worked at another job.

16 and 17 year old may not work:

  • More than 9 hours a day
  • More than 48 hours during your co-op cycle
  • More than 6 days during your co-op cycle
  • At night, from 10:00 PM to 6:00 A.M. on school nights. You may work through 11:30 on non-school nights (during your co-op cycle).
