Minutes of Health Advisory Council Meeting
June 9, 2004

Call to order: 9:10 A.M.

Jane Silveira opened the meeting and welcomed members and guests from Taunton High Schools Health Advisory Council.

Council member and guests introduced themselves and were provided with a copy of the agenda.

Steve Bradshaw distributed copies of the Safe and Drug Free Schools grant application:

Active Parent permission for Youth Risk Behavior Survey discussed-plan to include a letter with a tear off in the 9th grade summer notification packet and include the same letter in the student handbook for 10th, 11th and 12th grade.

Jane Silveira reviewed what has happened since our January meeting:

Linda Pacheco discussed further evidence that the Internet, in many circumstances is the first place where harassment begins and later leads to violence. Need for ongoing Internet Safety Education.

Commended Jane for her role in providing important programs for BP students.

Richard Gross discussed the modified Physical Education Program to be implemented in the upcoming school year. BP will be providing a full “Fitness for Life” program geared towards individual fitness plans, nutrition education and documentation of progress.

Tom Goebel discussed ongoing food service initiatives:

Steve Turner commented on the statistics in the violence-related behaviors section of the grant, particularly the 98.5% of students who said that they never stayed home from school because they felt unsafe.

Commended Bristol Plymouth for doing such a good job of proving an atmosphere where students feel safe.

Steve thanked Mr. Gross for his valued participation in The Safe Neighborhood Initiative.

Bob Camarata discussed an increase in youth violence in Taunton over the past few months.

Commented on the work he and Mr. Gross are doing on the SNI task force in terms of gang related violence.

Commended Bristol Plymouth students for their cooperation on the school council.

Steve Bradshaw highlighted the importance of the Health Advisory Council and commended all in attendance.

Steve and Jane thanked the group for their continued support and interest.
