The goal of special education services at Bristol-Plymouth is to provide an instructional program that will minimize student disability and maximize learning opportunities. The purpose of the program is to provide individualized instruction to meet the needs of eligible students and to develop academic, social/emotional and career technical skills.
Bristol-Plymouth follows a full inclusion model for every student, including students with special needs, in all academic and technical areas. Students with special needs apply to Bristol-Plymouth in the same manner as all other students. Once a student with special needs is accepted, staff from Bristol-Plymouth will work closely with personnel at the sending school to ensure students receive all appropriate services they need to be successful within the general curriculum.
At this time, the special education staff is comprised of eight certified special education teachers and six highly qualified paraprofessionals. All students with special needs are assigned a special education consultant to monitor their progress and provide accommodations during technical weeks. In addition to this, the department has organized its support of students with special needs into three levels within the academic week:
Classes with an academic teacher only monitored by a special education consultant
Classes with an academic teacher and a special education paraprofessional monitored by a special education consultant
Classes with an academic and special education teacher who provides direct service in the classroom
Finally, Bristol-Plymouth provides related services such as: Occupational, Physical or Speech Therapy and Counseling.
